  • 영국 친구, AJ가 영어 공부를 도와 주고 있다

    영국 친구, AJ(Amy-Jane Foster)가 내가 쓴 짧은 영어 단락을 문법적으로 봐 주고 고쳐 주었다. 앞으로도 일 주일에 적어도 한 편씩은 짧은 영어 단락을 쓰고, AJ에게 검토를 받기로 했다. (겉모습은 약간 독특하지만, 정말 마음씨가 착하고 이해심이 많은 친구다.)

     

    Ms. Amy-Jane Foster is going to "grammatically"correct my short notes for my learning writing English. At least I'll write an English passage, and she will help me to. (*AJ is a well-educated, incredibly kind, friendly, caring and genuine friend of mine.) 


    (Me) Bill O'Hanlon was the last student of the wizard from Arizona desert. 
    (AJ) Bill O'Hanlon was the last student of the 'Wizard from Arizona desert.'
    _ 작은 따옴표 사용.

    (Me) I love the very story how they met up each other and how the wizard hired Bill as his personal gardener. 
    (AJ) I love the story of how they met each other, and how the wizard hired Bill as his personal gardener.
    _ how가 이끄는 명사절 앞에 전치사 of를 빼 먹었군.

    (Me) Recently, I’ve found a “special” student for teaching brief therapy. 
    (AJ) Recently, I’ve found a “special” student with whom to teach brief therapy.
    _ 관계사 절을 사용하면 되는 거였어! 전치사 + 관계사, 를 이런 식으로 쓸 수 있는지 알고 있었지만, 한 수 잘 배운 것 같다.

    (Me) She is a generalist social worker in a public local short-term shelter for abused female teens.
    (AJ) She is a generalised social worker in a local public short-term shelter for abused young women.
    _ generalist는 일종의 용어라서, 그냥 generalist라고 쓰는 게 맞는 것 같긴 한데... 
    _ female을 쓰면 안되나? AJ에게 물어봐야겠군.

    (Me) I realized she was the very person whom I had been looking for my personal Luke Skywalker. The one who could finally control the balance of the Force.

    _ 관계대명사 whom을 생략하고, 하이픈을 활용해서 동격임을 나타낸다. 
    _ 세미콜론을 적절하게 사용한다.

    (Me) Ha. I knew Bill had nothing for learning from the wizard. 
    (AJ) Ha. I knew Bill had nothing for learning from the wizard.

    (Me) Well, my student has a full-time job, but I teach her brief therapy for almost free. 
    (AJ) Well, my student has a full-time job, and I teach her brief therapy for almost free.

    _ 역접인데 왜 and를 썼지? 물어 봐야겠군. 

    (Me) Why? I don’t want see anyone special who “really” wants to learn brief therapy hesitate to learn because of money. 
    (AJ) Why? I don’t want to see any special person who truly wants to learn brief therapy hesitate to learn purely because of money.  
    _ 내가 want 다음에 목적어로 나오는 to부정사 앞에 to를 생략해서 틀렸군.
    _ really보다 truly가 맞나? 뉘앙스 때문인가? 물어봐야겠군.
    _ purely라는 부사도 truly와 동의어인데.

    (Me) So I want her(my first personal student) teach another special student about brief therapy for free.
    (AJ) I want to use her inspiration (as my first personal student) to teach another special student about brief therapy for free.
    _ 하긴... 영어를 잘 못하는 것들이 so를 남발하는 경향이 있지.
    _ to use one's inspiration: 이 표현을 잘 익혀 두었다가 써야겠군.
    _ to teach someone about something이 자연스럽게 느껴지는군.

    _ 앞 뒤 단어 구성/배치 일관성을 중요시하는 거지.

    (AJ) Yes, I was completely inspired by their touching story: Bill and Dr. Milton H. Erickson.
    _ 콜론 사용에 문제가 없었군. 앞으로도 계속 써야지.
